PDP Factional Chairman Makarfi blames APC chieftains for crisis in his party

Nigeria - Consequent upon last week’s botched national convention of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Port Harcourt, Caretaker Committee Chairman, Senator Ahmed Mohammed Makarfi, has traced the crisis rocking the party to the doorsteps of some key political actors in the All Progressives Congress (APC), urging President Muhammadu Buhari to call them to order to save the nation’s nascent democracy.
Besides, the party leader blamed security agencies for disrupting the PDP convention, by sealing off the venue, while urging them not to be partisan and allow themselves to be used to derail democracy in the country.

Makarfi insisted that the party will soon bounce back to provide vibrant and genuine opposition for the general well-being of the nation.
Makarfi Said: “I still have strong reservation and I still very much doubt the involvement of the President in this matter. But there is visible involvement of heavy weights in the party in power; all of them for their own different political permutations, not necessarily for the interest of the stability, peace and progress of the country; and not necessarily for the interest of the success of the APC-led Federal Government at this particular time.
Senator Makarfi argued: “My call is for the central government to look into the issues of over-ambitious people within it and curb their excesses, as these can derail the nascent democracy we are trying to culture. I wouldn’t want to mention names, but we have certain names in focus. None of them has the national interest or the interest of the APC-led Government at heart.”
Noting the role of the security agencies in the botched PDP convention, the PDP Chairman said: “It is also unfortunate, if because of their positions in the government of the day, the security agents should allow themselves to be used to cause possible major disruption of peace and stability in our country.
“The security agencies knew we had changed venue and were meeting at another place. I should give them some credit there that they did not attempt to disrupt that second venue. I don’t know if that was an afterthought, but as we condemn one thing, we equally have to acknowledge where a measured action was taken.”
