FOOTBALL: FIFA approves trial for video assistant referees effective from 2017/2018 season


The use of video assistant referees in football games is to be tested in live matches in the 2017-18 season
The International Football Association Board (IFAB) has approved trials for video assistant referees.
A decision to test the advantages and disadvantage of video assistants in private before implementing live experiments for the 2017-18 season was taken at IFAB's annual general meeting in Cardiff on Saturday.

Justice Peter Affen of the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) in Maitama ruled yesterday that the continued detention of ex-National Security Adviser (NSA), Mohammed Sambo Dasuki, was in order.
The judge, ruling on an application by Dasuki, held that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), the Departmnet of State Services (DSS) and the Federal Government did not violate any subsisting court order in the detention of Dasuki.

Sixty people have been hospitalised, mostly for burns, after the engine on a Bangkok commuter boat exploded and sent passengers leaping to a nearby pier or into the water.

The crowded boat was ferrying passengers on Saturday on a major canal in the eastern outskirts of the Thai capital, which boasts an extensive network of waterways that teem with motorised commuter boats during rush hour.

Most of the injured were later released from the hospital with minor injuries, while 14 were still receiving treatment, according to the city's Erawan emergency medical centre.

WORLD HEALTH RESEARCH: Zika virus caught 'killing' brain cells


Zika virus kills the type of tissue found in the developing brain, researchers have shown.

It was able to destroy or disrupt the growth of neural progenitor cells, which build the brain and nervous system, in lab tests.

The discovery, published in the journal Cell Stem Cell, adds weight to claims that Zika is causing brain abnormalities in babies.

However, the US researchers caution this is not yet the conclusive link.

US Republican front-runner Donald Trump has dropped out of a major conservative political conference, opting instead to campaign in Kansas and Florida.

More than 100 people were arrested in Nigeria’s commercial capital, Lagos, after bloody riots in the city’s biggest food market left at least three people dead, police said on Friday.

“The police have arrested 105 suspects in connection with the disturbances in and around ‘Mile 12’ market,” Lagos state police spokeswoman Dolapo Badmus told AFP referring to rioting which took place on Thursday.

“Three people died in the fracas. The suspects will be charged shortly with murder, arson and breach of public peace,” she said.

Some of Apple's biggest tech competitors have come together to support its refusal to unlock an iPhone to assist an FBI investigation.

The Pipelines and Product Marketing Company, PPMC, Thursday, assured Nigerians that the fuel scarcity currently witnessed across the country would end by weekend.

Speaking in Abuja, Managing Director of the PPMC, Mrs. Esther Nnamdi-Ogbue, stated that right now, more than 300 trucks should be arriving in Abuja.

Google's charitable arm has donated $1m (£710,000) to Unicef to help stop the spread of the Zika virus.

The virus is suspected to be linked to a large number of babies born with underdeveloped brains in Brazil.

In February, the World Health Organization declared the Zika virus a global public health emergency.

Two lions and more than 100 vultures have died after eating a poisoned elephant's carcass, officials have said.

It is feared the killings in South Africa's Kruger National Park, indicate a new method of poaching.

The park's managing executive Glenn Phillips said: "It seems poachers have resorted to wildlife poisoning in the national parks and other protected areas in Southern Africa."

All is now set for the trial of a former Chief of Defence Staff, Air Chief Marshal Alex Badeh, for diverting N1.1 billion, among others, meant for Nigerian Air Force (NAF) to buy a choice mansion for himself in Abuja.

Other allegations against Badeh include alleged spending of NAF funds to build a shopping mall worth N878,362,732.94; another N650 million for the purchase of a commercial plot of land and $2 million on a duplex in Abuja.

WORLD NEWS: TECH - Arrested Facebook top executive ordered to be released by court


A Facebook executive arrested in Brazil is due to be released after a day behind bars.

The social network's Latin America vice president Diego Dzodan was taken into custody at Guarulhos airport on Tuesday.

The arrest was related to a dispute over a court order demanding data from the company's WhatsApp messaging service in a drug-trafficking investigation, which WhatsApp refused.

FOOTBALL: Adam Johnson convicted of child sex charge


Footballer Adam Johnson could face up to 10 years in jail after being found guilty of one charge of sexual activity with a child.

The former Sunderland winger, who was convicted of touching a 15-year-old girl intimately, was told by the judge a "significant custodial sentence" was highly probable.

Earlier in the day, 28-year-old Johnson was cleared of another similar charge - relating to a sex act.

Before his trial started last month, he had admitted grooming the girl and sexual activity with her, relating to kissing her in his car.

WORLD NEWS: Millions To Be Spent 'On Jihad' according to Osama Bin Laden's handwritten will


Osama bin Laden's handwritten will has been released by US intelligence officials - in which the al Qaeda leader said he wanted most of his £20.7m wealth to be used "on jihad".

The document, which was seized from his Pakistan bolthole when he was killed in 2011, is among 113 newly declassified files made public.

He outlined the specific quantities of cash and gold to be given to his mother, a son, a daughter and other relatives - as well as two of his closest associates.
