South Africa bids emotional farewell to ‘Mama Winnie’ Mandela

Thousands of mourners flocked Wednesday to the heart of South Africa’s sprawling Soweto township, a centre of anti-apartheid resistance, to pay tribute to Nelson Mandela’s former wife and struggle hero Winnie Mandela.

Her grandson Bambatha Mandela described Winnie, who died on April 2 after a long illness, as “an extraordinary woman, a mother, a soldier, a fighter”.

HARD DRUGS!!! NDLEA seizes 3,892kg of hard drugs in Oyo State

Nigeria - The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency ( NDLEA ) in Oyo State says it has  seized 3,891.875 kg of suspected hard drugs and secured 15 convictions in the first quarter of 2018.

The State Commander, Mrs Omolade Faboyede,  said  this in a statement made available to the News men on Wednesday in Ibadan.

Scare as military plane with 100 on board crashes in Algeria

An Algerian transport plane with around 100 army personnel on board crashed on Wednesday shortly after taking off from an airbase outside the capital.

There was no immediate word on casualties after the plane went down near the Boufarik airbase.

Indonesian police on Wednesday vowed to crack down on the sale of illegal alcohol after home-made liquor killed no fewer than 82 people on the island of Java.

The deputy national police chief Muhammad Syafruddin said that the victims died in West Java province and Jakarta after consuming cheap home-made alcoholic drinks.

Guinness World Records on Tuesday named 112-year-old Japan’s Masazo Nonaka world oldest living man.

The title holder was visited at his hometown of Hokkaido by Erika Ogawa, VP Japan for Guinness World Records to officially present him with a certificate for the iconic record.

FG confirms recovery of $322.51m of Abacha's loot from Switzerland

Nigeria - The Federal Government says it has received 322.51 million dollars from the Swiss Government as part of looted funds recovered from former Head of State, late General Sani Abacha.

Mr Oluyinka Akintunde, the Special Adviser, Media and Communications to the Minister of Finance, said this in a statement on Tuesday in Abuja.

NAF says several Boko Haram militants killed in aerial bombardment in Borno

The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) said on Tuesday the Air Task Force unit of Operation Lafiya Dole in a combined operation with NAF carried out air strikes against Boko Haram terrorists in Arege and Tumbum Rago areas of Borno State, killing several insurgents in the process.

The NAF Spokesperson, Air Vice Marshal Olatokunbo Adesanya, said in a statement that ISR Platforms were used for the strikes which destroyed Boko Haram vehicles and killed the occupants inside.

TRAGIC!!! At least 27 children dead as school bus plunges into gorge in India

At least 27 children have died after a school bus plunged 200ft (60m) into a gorge in the Himalayan foothills in India.

The young victims were said to be aged between 10 and 12.
