Al Shabaab attacks Somali town, kills seven soldiers

Somalia’s Islamist militant group al Shabaab attacked a town in a region near Kenya’s border, killing at least seven Somali soldiers, the group and Somali officials said.

Al Shabaab, which regularly attacks Somali forces in its campaign to oust Somalia’s Western-backed government, pulled its fighters out of El Wak overnight, residents said on Saturday.

Israeli missile downs rocket fired from Syria

Israel’s Iron Dome missile defence system destroyed a rocket fired from Syria at the Israeli-held zone of the Golan Heights Saturday in an apparent uptick in tension between the uneasy neighbours.

“A projectile fired from Syria was intercepted by the Iron Dome aerial defence system. No injuries have been reported,” a military statement said.

Attack on US cop leaves two dead, including gunman

A series of shootings that began with an apparently unprovoked attack on a Philadelphia policewoman left two people dead and five injured, police said Saturday. The suspected gunman was among the dead.

The attack came in a year marked by attacks on police in racially charged incidents that followed complaints of police abuse.

The shooter’s motives were not entirely clear, and police have not mentioned the race of anyone involved. Media reports however said that the shooter left a note expressing hatred for police.

South African cleric and anti-apartheid icon, Desmond Tutu, was readmitted to hospital on Saturday to treat an infection following a surgery last week, his family said.

Tutu, the former Anglican archbishop of Cape Town, was discharged from hospital on Wednesday after a successful surgery to treat recurring infections that have afflicted him in the past.

A terminally ill child has become the first minor to be euthanised in Belgium, it has been confirmed.  

Euthanasia is the practice of intentionally ending a life in order to relieve pain and suffering.

The head of Belgium's federal euthanasia commission Professor Wim Distelmans said the death was reported to his committee by a local doctor.

Florida expands Zika Virus zone in Miami Beach after five new cases

State officials in Florida on Friday tripled the active Zika transmission zone in the trendy seaside community of Miami Beach after five new cases of the mosquito-borne virus believed to cause a severe birth defect were identified in the area.

The active transmission zone grew from 1.5 square miles to 4.5 square miles and consists of a large portion of the popular tourist destination, Florida Governor Rick Scott said in a statement on Friday evening.

BOKO HARAM self confessed spokesman Konduga rearrested

Nigeria - According to The Guarfian, the self-confessed spokesman of the Boko Haram Islamist sect, Ali Sanda Umar Konduga (aka Al-Zawahiri), who was sentenced to three years imprisonment without option of fine and released last week, was rearrested at the residence of Senator Mohammed Ali Ndume in Maiduguri, the Borno State capital, by some residents and policemen attached to the Government Reservation Area (GRA) Police Station.

The Pentagon says a US air strike has killed one of so-called Islamic State's most senior leaders, Wa'il Adil Hasan Salman al-Fayad, in Syria.

Also known as "Dr Wa'il", he was minister of information for IS, and oversaw the production of propaganda videos showing executions.

Inflation rises to 17.6% as naira depreciates against the dollar

Nigeria - The Naira on Friday depreciated in most major segments of the foreign exchange market just as inflation hits 17.6 percent. The Nigerian currency fell by N2.24 to exchange at N308.69 to the dollar at the interbank market, from N306.93 recorded on Thursday.

At the Bureau De Change it closed at N420 to the dollar, N550 to the Pound Sterling and N465 against the Euro.

Myanmar soldiers jailed with hard labour for village killings

A Myanmar military court has jailed seven soldiers for five years each with hard labor for murdering five ethnic minority villagers in June, state media said on Friday, in a rare prosecution of military personnel.

The seven, including four officers, will serve their time in civilian prisons, said a report from a court martial in northeastern Myanmar.

Soldiers have often been accused of serious human rights abuses in Myanmar's long-running wars with ethnic armed groups, but the allegations are rarely acknowledged, let alone heard in court.
