Bolivia's deputy interior minister has been beaten to death by striking mine workers after being kidnapped, according to local media reports.
Moises Flores, a radio station director, said he had seen the body of 56-year-old Rodolfo Illanes.
"We have been able to see close up that vice-minister Illanes was dead," he said. "Colleagues told us that he had died of a beating."
However, Mr Illanes' reported death has not been confirmed officially.
"We still have not confirmed the situation of this official, if he is alive or deceased," Bolivian state prosecutor Ramiro Guerrero said at a news conference.
The government confirmed on Thursday that Mr Illanes had been abducted after he went to talk to protesters in Panduro, around 100 miles (160km) from the capital, La Paz.
Protests by miners in Bolivia demanding changes to laws turned violent this week after a motorway was blockaded.
Demonstrators said police had fired on them and killed two workers.
The National Federation of Mining Cooperatives of Bolivia, once strong allies of leftist President Evo Morales, began what they said would be an indefinite protest after negotiations over mining legislation failed.
Protesters have been demanding more mining concessions, the right to work for private companies, and greater union representation.
