Lychees suspected over mystery child deaths in India

A mystery illness that kills more than a hundred children in eastern India each year may be caused by eating lychees, according to scientists.
Researchers said consuming the tropical fruit on an empty stomach could be behind the deaths.
A toxin found in lychees inhibits glucose levels, which combined with already low levels as a result of not eating, affects the brain.

Nigeria - The agitation for the recognition for an independent Biafra state took a disappointing dip as the United States (US) and the United Kingdom (UK) confirmed that they do not accept the "Biafran passport" because the supposed independent country is not recognised.



The Movement for the Actualisation of a Sovereign State Of Biafra (MASSOB) had insisted that such a document has validity all over the world, except Nigeria, and urged its supposed citizens to use it to secure visa for international travel.

Ibori evades airport reception, gets rousing welcome in hometown


Nigeria -Former Delta State Governor, James Ibori, on Saturday evaded the huge crowd waiting for him at Osubi Airstrip, outside Warri and arrived his Oghara hometown through the Benin Airport.

The crowd of enthusiasts, including politicians and traditional rulers, had waited for him at Osubi from about 10am, following information that the former governor was to arrive from Abuja through the airstrip.

US authorities on Saturday suspended President Donald Trump’s controversial ban on travelers from seven Muslim countries, following a court ruling that blocked its enforcement.
“We have reversed the provisional revocation of visas,” a US State Department spokesman told AFP. The department had said some 60,000 travel visas had been revoked in compliance with the president’s recent executive order.

The Flag Officer Commanding (FOC) Eastern Naval Command, Rear Admiral James Oluwole, disclosed this in Port Harcourt on Saturday at the conclusion of the first phase of “Operation River Sweep I.”

The World Health Organisation (WHO) says its has developed a guide to effectively address all barriers to early diagnosis of cancer. In a message released to the Commemoration of the 2017 World Cancer Day on Saturday, WHO called for improved access to treatment of cancer.
The message read: “In anticipation of World Cancer Day, WHO has developed a Guide to Cancer Early Diagnosis, to help effectively address barriers to early cancer diagnosis.

The body of a Canadian film-maker who disappeared off the coast of Florida has reportedly been found.
Shortly after announcing that it would be suspending its search, the US Coast Guard tweeted that a body had been found at a depth of 220ft.
The 37-year-old from Toronto was known for his 2006 documentary Sharkwater.
