Nigeria - The arrest and prosecution of Sango-Otta, Ogun State resident, Joachim Iroko, for naming his pet dog, Buhari has been daubed a “laughable incident” by the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Publicity, Mallam Garba Shehu.
Shehu in a riposte to critics who believe that the President should have stopped the police from harassing Iroko said such people do not understand Buhari.
They are in “ignorance of the type of person he is,” he said on his twitter handle on Thursday night.
He added: “He enjoys cartoons and likes sharing them. The ones he enjoys the most are those that caricature him.
“People should listen to the real story behind this dog incident and to not waste precious time seeking the hand of the President in a laughable incident!”
It is the first reaction from the Presidency since the news broke two weeks ago.
Iroko was charged before an Ota Magistrate Court on Monday for conduct likely to cause breach of the peace.
The prosecutor, Inspector Itaita Ebibomini, said the accused committed the offence on August 13 at the Hausa section of Ketere Market in Sango-Ota in the Ota Magisterial District.
The prosecutor told the court that the offence was punishable under Section 249 (d) of the Criminal Law of Ogun State 2016.
He pleaded not guilty and was granted bail in the sum of N50,000 and two sureties.
He was able to perfect the bail conditions only after spending three days at the Ibara, Abeokuta prisons.
Shortly after his release, Iroko said his arrest and confinement brought untold trauma on his family.
“The President must be having a good laugh over this whole thing,” Shehu said.
