Roadside bomb kills police officer, soldier in Egypt
A police officer and a soldier were killed by a roadside bomb in Egypt’s northern Sinai peninsula on Saturday, security sources said.
The bomb was detonated remotely when the victims’ armoured vehicle passed by during a security operation, the sources told Reuters.

Thai King urges unity in first New Year speech
Thailand's King Maha Vajiralongkorn called for unity in his first New Year address since taking over from his late father, who was widely seen as a unifying force during decades of turbulence.

Nigeria - The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has debunked speculation that its Acting Chairman, Mr Ibrahim Magu, has been removed from office.
“It is not true,” spokesman of the commission, Mr Wilson Uwujaren, said in response to an SMS enquiry by the News Agency of Nigeria in Abuja on Saturday.

Nigeria - President Muhammadu Buhari on Friday recalled reasons for his removal as military Head of State in 1985.
According to him, his refusal to adhere to an advice from the IMF, World Bank to devalue the naira and increase prices of fuel and flour, led to the coup against him.

Police make 50 arrests after raid on Nigerian drug ring in Vienna, Austria

Police in Vienna on Thursday, December 29th, arrested 50 people in connection with a Nigerian drug ring which operated in the Austrian capital. Investigators said they had been on the trail of the gang for the past three years, and that in that time it has netted a profit of over €6 million. 21 kilos of illegal drugs, mainly cocaine and heroin, were seized during the raids.
Meanwhile in US, Code associated with Russia hacking found on Vermont utility computer
A code associated with a broad Russian hacking campaign dubbed Grizzly Steppe by the Obama administration has been detected on a laptop associated with a Vermont electric utility but not connected to the grid, the utility said on Friday.
"We took immediate action to isolate the laptop and alerted federal officials of this finding," the Burlington Electric Department said in a statement.
Oh my! Central Baghdad market blasts kill dozens
Two suicide bombers ripped through a busy market area in central Baghdad Saturday, shattering a relative lull in attacks in the capital and dampening preparations for New Year celebrations.
The bombers attacked the Al-Sinek area, killing at least 27 people and wounding 53, a police colonel said. An officer in the interior ministry and a hospital official confirmed the toll.
