Nigeria will feature at the Rio 2016 Olympics as African champions after defeating Algeria 2-1 in the final of the African U23 championship played at the Stade Leopold Sedar Senghor on Saturday night.

Etebo Oghenekaro, the competition’s top scorer repeated his fluency and brilliance in front of goal as he scored the goals that handed the Dream Team VI their first Africa U23 diadem.

The dogged north Africans got a life line as Segun Oduduwa nodded home Zinedine Ferhat’s cross but the Nigerians stayed stanch with goalkeeper Emmanuel Daniel saving Ferhat’s penalty in the second half.

It was the first time Nigeria had conceded in the first half of the competition but it came to a bitter pill to swallow for Pierre Andre Schurmann’s team who failed to convert their chances in both halves.

Victor Osimhen passed up a glorious chance in the first minute of the game and the 16-year-old also had couples of chances thrown away.

NEWS: BURUNDI - 87 KILLED IN BURUNDI VIOLENCE

Eighty-seven people were killed in violence that broke out after three military sites were attacked in Burundi on Friday, the army says.

Eight of those who died were security officers and 49 people were captured, Col Gaspard Baratuza said.

Residents in the capital earlier said the bodies of some 34 men were found on the streets - and accused police of taking revenge. It is not clear if that number is included in the army's total.

Unrest has hit Burundi since April.

There have been continued protests since President Pierre Nkurunziza announced his decision to seek a third term in office, which he won in a disputed election in July.

Friday saw some of the worst violence since the unrest began. Officials described heavily armed attackers launching co-ordinated early morning assaults on army installations in three areas - Ngagara, Musaga and Mujejuru.

Fighting could then be heard throughout the day and sporadic gunfire continued overnight.

Residents said dozens of men were rounded up as their homes were raided, and many of their bodies were found on the streets of the capital on Saturday morning.

The largest number of bodies were found in Nyakabiga district, a focus of anti-government protests. Others were discovered in the southern neighbourhood of Musaga.

One witness told the AFP news agency that some of the victims were "kids" and had been shot execution-style "through the top of the skull".

BBC Africa analyst Richard Hamilton says bodies on the streets are almost a daily occurrence in Bujumbura but this was by far the largest number of deaths in one night.

Col Gaspard Baratuza, giving details of the final toll, said that "79 enemies" were killed, "45 captured and 97 weapons seized and on our side eight soldiers and policemen were killed and 21 wounded".

According to the UN, at least 240 people have been killed since April and more than 200,000 have fled to neighbouring countries.

There have been regular killings of both opposition activists and Nkurunziza supporters.

The violence has raised fears of a return to worsening ethnic tension between Hutus and Tutsis.

Mr Nkurunziza led a Hutu rebel group against the then Tutsi-dominated army during the civil war that followed the killing of Hutu President Melchior Ndadaye in 1993.

NEWS: NIGERIA - Alleged 13bn Land Scam: Tompolo replies EFCC, says I’m not on the run

Ex-militant Leader, High Chief Government Ekpemupolo, alias Tompolo has denied media reports that he failed to respond to an invitation by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

In a statement on Saturday, Tompolo refuted reports of his invitation by the EFCC, alleging that he was only being witch-hunted because he bluntly refused to join the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), as well as to support their Governorship candidate in Bayelsa State.

Recall that on Thursday, the EFCC had given the former Niger Delta militant leader, one week to appear before the Commission on Awolowo Road, Ikoyi, Lagos or risk being declared wanted.

In a letter from the EFCC, the Commission says it is investigating Tompolo for unclear dealings involving the sale of parcels of land worth about 13 billion naira to the federal government under the last administration.

He is expected to appear at the EFCC training room on Thursday, December 17.

But in his statement today, Tompolo said: “On the November 24th 2015, I was informed at about 4 p.m. that a letter of invitation had been dropped at my home in Warri, inviting me to EFCC’s office in Lagos by 10 a.m. on the 25th of November 2015. I responded by a letter from my Solicitors, Messrs. Jakpa, Edoge & Co. The letter dated November 25th 2015 was received by one Uduak Ouot, a staff of EFCC, on the 3rd of December 2015, after several attempts to deliver. I have proof of delivery from the courier company.”

Mr. Ekpemupolo said he was surprised that the EFCC, which he described as “an otherwise reputable institution,” lied to Nigerians. He added that his lawyer’s letter “indicated I am already in court with the EFCC in Suit No: FHC/W/CS/152/2015. EFCC had been served with the court processes since 20th of October 2015 but they refused to attend court on several occasions, or to file any court papers, only to appear for the first time on 30th November 2015 without filing any court papers. They even asked for the matter to be adjourned to 17th December 2015, the date they are now inviting me to appear before them.”

He stated that the anti-corruption agency invited him two months after he had sued them. He said he had informed the EFCC of his readiness to honor their invitation once the court rules on his own suit, adding that the agency seemed bent on harassing him through their “reminder of 9th December 2015, which was leaked to the media on the 10th of December 2015, the same day as it was delivered to my house in Warri.”

Mr. Ekpemupolo stated, “As a full blooded Ijaw man and citizen of Nigeria, I have done everything in my power to follow the laws of Nigeria. Since the amnesty declared in 2009 by [the] late President Yar’Adua I have strained myself to ensure that we all live in peace in this country. Those who think they can push us to war must rethink the necessity of such a war.

“How can a law-abiding Government declare a man wanted who is in the law courts with them?

“They froze our business accounts since August 4th 2015, but we have not quarreled with anybody. We sued them to court, they refused to come to court. Now they are threatening to declare me wanted.

“I know why they are after me. It is not the alleged multi-billion naira property transaction. After all, it went through due process and was approved by the Federal Executive Council (FEC). And as such if there are any questions to answer, it is the people at the FEC, Bureau of Public Procurement (BPP), Federal Ministry of Lands and Survey, Federal Ministry of Transport, NIMASA, etc who approved the transaction that should be answering such questions.

“The real reason this All Progressive Congress (APC)-led Government is after me is that I bluntly refused to join APC and to support their Governorship candidate in Bayelsa State. We cannot all be in APC. Our people have always believed in the Nigerian project and had always hoped to join hands with this administration to move this project forward, but the conditions being attached are not acceptable. I insist on believing in the Nigerian project unconditionally!

“We will continue to pursue our court case. The threat to declare me wanted is an unnecessary attempt to heat up the polity. I will go about my daily business, [as] usual.

“Finally, let me say this: if people can come from Sokoto, Katsina or Lagos to campaign in Bayelsa, why can’t I, a full-blooded Ijaw man, go to my Bayelsa to campaign? I will only add this: let the will of the people of Bayelsa prevail. Nobody should attempt to force the outcome of the election. We have kept faith with our promise to Nigeria, we expect no less from this country. So if anyone tells you that Tompolo is on the run, tell him Tompolo is not going anywhere.”

NEWS: NIGERIA - You can’t be more Biafran than Ojukwu who abandoned struggle’

Chief Ben Apugo was a member of the Board of Trustees (BoT) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), the former ruling party at the centre.

In this interview, Apugo speaks on why he, alongside Senate President Bukola Saraki, former Governor Nyako of Adamawa State, and Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso, quit the PDP. He also speaks on the fate of the APC in the South-East and the pro-Biafra quest by some Igbo elements, among other issues.

Pro-Biafra agitators have been protesting across the South-East and some parts of the South-South. Are you in support of their agitation?

The civil war ended a long ago time and we are all Nigerians. No reasonable human being should come out today to talk about Biafra. Our people have to speak up and make our children understand the situation of things. Those things they should be protesting for are employment, roads, water, airports and other amenities that are lacking in the zone. If they are agitating for these things, they should not block roads; they should talk to the government of the states in the South-East, not the Federal Government.

These people you are talking about are small boys whose mothers were not even born during the civil war. So, what I am saying is that the governors of the South-East should enlighten the youths and make them know that there is nothing like Biafra today. People should not be using Biafra as a tool for causing confusion and defrauding uninformed people.

The Federal Government should not be looking at the South-East, especially Umuahia, since they said their leader,Nnamdi Kanu, is from here, as not supporting Buhari. Buhari did not create any problem in the South-East. All the while, (former President Goodluck) Jonathan was there, they should have gone to demonstrate about Biafra. Buhari will tackle all the problems we are facing now, our former governors did not perform, and they did not create avenues for employment, no empowerment. My advice to our children is that they should forget about hoping against hope. We have cancelled Biafra.

Let them look for the betterment of this country and themselves. They should avoid this protest because it will not yield any fruit. Their leaders will not fight more than Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu and Joe Effiong, who despite their efforts, Biafra failed at the end.

NEWS: COP21 - World leaders make history with climate deal in Paris

Delegates from 195 nations reached an unprecedented agreement on global climate change on Saturday in the French capital after years of often fruitless negotiations for a legally binding deal to limit carbon emissions.

French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius brought the historic UN negotiations in Paris to an end as relieved ministers stood for several minutes to applaud.

"I see the room, I see the reaction is positive - I hear no objection. The Paris climate accord is adopted," Fabius declared, officially ending the summit with a knock of a little green hammer.


"It may be a small gavel but it can do big things," he said.

The landmark deal comes after negotiators from key nations - including China, the United States, and India - gave their approval to a draft accord presented by host France earlier in the day.

The legally binding pact limiting greenhouse gas emissions provides the world a road map for breaking away from fossil fuels that have powered the global economy since the Industrial Revolution.

The deal - to take effect from 2020 - ends years of disagreement between rich and poor nations over how to carry out what will be a multi-trillion-dollar effort to slow down global warming and deal with its consequences already occurring around the planet.

"We have opened a new chapter of hope in the lives of 7 billion people on the planet," said India's Environment Minister Prakash Javadekar. "We have [the planet] on loan from future generations. We have today reassured these future generations that we will all together give them a better Earth."

Cap on greenhouse gases
The Paris accord sets a target of limiting warming of the planet to "well below" 2.0 degrees Celsius compared with pre-industrial levels, while aiming for an even more ambitious goal of 1.5C.

To do so, the emissions of greenhouse gases will need to peak "as soon as possible", followed by rapid reductions, the agreement states.

The world has already warmed almost 1C, which has caused major problems for many people around the world - particularly in developing countries - such as more severe storms, droughts, and rising seas, according to scientists.

Developing nations had insisted rich countries must shoulder the lion's share of responsibility for tackling climate change as they emitted most of the greenhouse gases since the Industrial Revolution.

The United States and other rich nations countered that emerging economies must also do more.
Who is responsible for what's happening to our planet?


On the crucial issue of financing, developed countries agreed to muster at least $100bn a year from 2020 to help developing nations.

However, following US objections, it was not included in the legally binding section of the deal.

US President Barack Obama announced on Twitter the signing of the deal was "huge".

"Almost every country in the world just signed on to the #ParisAgreement on climate change - thanks to American leadership," the US president said.

Environment groups said the Paris agreement was a turning point in history and spelt the demise of the fossil fuel industry, pointing particularly to the significance of the 1.5C goal.

"That single number - and the new goal of net zero emissions by the second half of this century - will cause consternation in the boardrooms of coal companies and the palaces of oil-exporting states," Greenpeace International chief Kumi Naidoo said.

NEWS:GAMBIA - Gambia's president declares Islamic statehood

Gambia's president has declared the West African country an Islamic republic saying the decision was made because Islam is the religion of most citizens and the nation must break away from its colonial past.

President Yahya Jammeh made the declaration at the end of a political rally held on Friday at the coastal village Brufut, about 15km west of the capital Banjul.

"In line with the country's religious identity and values, I proclaim Gambia as an Islamic state," the Gambian leader said.


About 90 percent of Gambia's 1.8 million people are Muslim. The country gained independence from Britain in 1965.

"Gambia cannot afford to continue the colonial legacy," Jammeh said.

In an attempt to allay the fears of religious minorities, Jammeh said the rights of Gambia's Christian community - who make up about eight percent of the country's population - will be protected.

Jammeh said there will be no mandates on dress. "We will be an Islamic state that would respect the rights of all citizens and non-citizens."

The head of the country's Islamic body would not say if he endorsed the declaration.

"We haven't met yet to discuss over the presidential announcement," said Supreme Islamic Council chairman Imam Momodou Lamin Touray.

Hamat Bah, of the opposition National Reconciliation Party, criticised the decision. "There is a constitutional clause that says that Gambia is a secular state," he said. "You cannot make such a declaration without going through a referendum."

Jammeh's government has been regularly criticised by Britain and other Western powers for human rights abuses. Jammeh has ruled Gambia since seizing power in 1994.

Jeffrey Smith, a senior advocacy officer at the Robert F Kennedy Center for Justice and Human Rights, told Al Jazeera that Jammeh's "unilateral" decision to call Gambia an Islamic republic is part of a "larger pattern of capriciousness" and has ulterior political motives.

"Gambia is not a country of laws but is rather ruled by the whims of Yahya Jammeh," Smith said.

"Second, Jammeh has burned all bridges with his former donors in the West due to his deplorable human rights track record and the rampant corruption that he has participated in.

"As such, he is desperately attempting to foster a closer and more lucrative relationship with the Arab world. By couching his decision in terms of 'fighting colonialism', we can see that he is trying to cozy up with other parts of the world that harbour anti-West sentiments," he said.

Jammeh's announcement came after Gambia said on Wednesday it would take in Rohingya refugees as part of its "sacred duty" to alleviate the suffering of fellow Muslims fleeing Southeast Asia to escape oppression.

The government of the West African nation appealed to countries of the region to send Rohingya refugees to its shores, where it said it would set them up in refugee camps.

"The government of Gambia notes with grave concern the inhumane condition of the Rohingya people of Myanmar - especially those referred to as 'boat people' - currently drifting in the seas off the coast of Malaysia and Indonesia," it said in a statement.

"As human beings - more so fellow Muslims - it is a sacred duty to help alleviate the untold hardships and sufferings fellow human beings are confronted with."

NEWS: CLIMATE CHANGE - Climate deal 'to keep temperature rise under 2C'

 

 France has submitted a draft deal to deligates at the UN climate change conference (COP 21) in Paris aimed at curbing emissions to defeat global warming.

Describing it as "a historic accord", French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius said on Saturday that the agreement would aim to limit warming of the planet since the Industrial Revolution to "well" below 2.0 degrees Celsius and strive for an even more ambitious goal of 1.5C.
"Our responsibility to history is immense," Fabius told thousands of officials, including President Francois Hollande and US Secretary of State John Kerry, in the main hall of the conference venue on the outskirts of French capital.
"It is my conviction that we have come up with an ambitious... agreement," Fabius said, telling the ministers they would achieve a "historic turning point" for the world if they endorsed it.

The draft agreement, that aims to transform the world's fossil fuel-driven economy within decades and turn the tide on global warming, comes after negotiators missed an initial deadline of Friday, as feuding ministers refused to budge on entrenched positions.
It now needs to be approved by deligates from 195 nations nations participating in the conference in the French capital.
Duncan Marsh of The Nature Conservancy, an environment body, told Al Jazeera that "it is a matter of finding the language. I just looked at the text, they have rephrased the language a little bit".
"And I think it looks like it may be acceptable to all while carrying the same meaning of moving towards de-carbonisation or emissions neutrality.
"Some key issues on finance, differentiation and transparency, that's what's remaining right now," he said.

With 2015 forecast to be the hottest year on record, world leaders and scientists have warned the accord is vital for capping rising temperatures and averting the most catastrophic consequences of climate change.
If climate change goes unabated, scientists warn of increasingly severe droughts, floods and storms, as well as rising seas that would engulf islands and coastal areas populated by hundreds of millions of people.
Fabius said that, if approved, the deal would set a "floor" in funding, in which at least $100 billion a year from 2020 would be channelled to help the developing world fight global warming.
The $100 billion fund was first promised by the top industrialised countries six years ago in Copenhagen to help developing nations transition to renewable energies and cope with the impacts of global warming.
But how the funds will be raised remained unclear going into the Paris talks, and developing nations had demanded clarity in the new accord.

Correspondent reporting from Paris, said: "Will see how it goes down when we have the plenary session in a little while. But such is the force of will here, there got to be a deal sooner or later."
"We are hearing that 3.1 section of the last incarnation of the texts which refers to long term goals, it's been a bit of sticking points with China.
"We know of course, US President Barack Obama and his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping have been speaking on phone, so may be progress is being made there," he said.
Marsh of The Nature Conservancy said that China and many other developing countries are on a major growth path. "They want to make sure their growth path is not constrained, and that’s not surprising," he said.

Observers said that it was not immediately clear if the financing would be a legal commitment, which the United States had been resisting.
UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon pressed the world's envoys to approve the pact.
"The end is in sight. Let's now finish the job. The world is watching," he said.
"Millions of people depend on your wisdom."

NEWS: NIGERIA - PDP drums support for APC government to end Boko Haram insurgency

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has urged Nigerians, irrespective of leanings, to rally round the APC–led government to end Boko Haram insurgency in the North-East.

Chief Olisa Metuh, PDP National Publicity Secretary, gave the advice on Friday in Abuja when he received the executive of an NGO, North Youth Network.
The NGO, led by its President, Mr Mike Msuaan, was on a courtesy visit to the National Publicity Secretary.
Metuh said: “the current insurgency is not against any political party, but against Nigeria and its citizens and as such, demands the collective efforts of all Nigerians to defeat.”
“It is God that joins Nigerians together nobody or organisation has the right to separate them.
“PDP remains supportive of the efforts of the Federal Government to see to the end of the insurgency.’’
The PDP spokesman said that as an opposition party, the PDP would be constructive in its criticism of government prgrammes and actions for the development of the country.
He, however, advised the government to guide against being selective in its programmes to the people, to ensure maximum dividends of democracy to the people.
Metuh reiterated that the commitment of the PDP to remain an open, transparent and responsible political party.
Commenting on the inconclusive governorship election in Bayelsa, the PDP image maker, called on INEC to conclude the poll and similar elections within 30 days.
He said that timely conclusion of the election would give the people more voice to contribute to issues bothering on national development.
Metuh commended the executive and members of the NGO for their commitment to the concept of being positive agent of development and urged them to continue in that light.
Earlier, Msuaan commended Metuh for the matured way he had been handling information management of the PDP.
He described the PDP as the `most constructive party’ in its criticism of the governing party and urged Metuh to continue to be the “voice of the voiceless,’’ to ensure good governance.
The highlight of the visit was the presentation of an award of excellence on Metuh by the NGO.
Members of the NGO, cutting across the 36 states of the federation attended the occasion.

FOOTBALL: Nigeria gets Africa’s first football pitch lit by players

Africa’s first football pitch lit solely by the players’ movements has been inaugurated in Lagos, the economic hub of power-starved Nigeria, at a ceremony attended by US-Senegalese rapper Akon.

The technology, invented by a young British engineer, consists of placing electronic tiles under the artificial turf, which is converted into power by kinetic energy.
Each time a player steps on a tile, seven watts of electricity are generated and sent to a battery.
The stored power helps to feed six powerful but low consumption LED floodlights that shine on the pitch. Solar panels around the pitch complement the technology, stocking electricity throughout the day.
The system has already been installed at a football pitch in a favela in Rio de Janeiro, in football-mad Brazil, which hosted the 2014 World Cup.
“It’s brilliant,” said Kusagba Oluwadamilola, an 18-year-old sports student, who plays for the football team at the Federal College of Education (Technical), where the pitch has been set up.
“It’s going to be really useful. Until now we couldn’t play at night,” he told AFP.
The man behind the technology, Laurence Kemball-Cook, 30, launched his own company, Pavegen, four years ago.
Since then, the invention has been installed in 150 locations across the globe from parks and airports to shops and even dance floors.
Inspiring new generations with new technology is essential, he said, particularly in Nigeria where residents often have just a few hours of power a day because of an erratic electricity supply.
As a result, households and companies are forced to rely on heavily polluting generators.
Kemball-Cook said the pitch would not only help “create a community” but also showed the need to diversify Africa’s energy mix.
“We need solar, we need other solutions as well… we need it right now, we don’t want to be using these fossil fuel generators. We need to be using more renewable sources of power,” he said.
With the initial cost of solar energy high, Kemball-Cook said he hoped to bring down the cost of the tiles by mass production to as little as $50 (45 euros) per square metre through economies of scale.

Rap superstar Akon made a surprise appearance at the launch of the newly built pitch on Thursday to the delight of the students.

He has been involved in renewable energy projects with his Akon Lighting Africa, created in 2004, whose objective is to electrify Africa with solar energy.
The project is already running in 15 countries and he is aiming for 34 by 2020.
“I am proud to be here,” said the singer and producer, who was born in the United States but spent his childhood in Senegal.
“Climate change makes things different today,” he said, as delegates to a UN conference in Paris thrashed out a historic agreement to cut global warming.
The Pavegen tiles are “an extraordinary concept for Africans who play football every day,” he added.
Football is the king of sports in Nigeria, whose national team the Super Eagles has won the African Cup of Nations three times, as well as gold at the 1996 Olympic Games.
“This is an amazing concept… to be able to generate energy while you’re playing football to me is a no brainer to help build new renewable sources and also to support the entrepreneur that comes up with this invention,” he added.
The development of renewable energy could create businesses and jobs in Africa, he added.
Anglo-Dutch oil giant Shell, partners of Pavegen, financed the installation of the pitch.
The company is the main oil explorer in Nigeria — Africa’s number one producer — and has been widely criticised for the environmental impact of its activities in theNiger Delta region.
Pavegen and Shell have learnt lessons from the Rio pitch, where residents objected to having to pay by the hour. There will be no charge at the Lagos pitch.

NEWS:US- US search for Afghan trainees who disappeared while training with the U.S. military

 

 US Air Force officials say the Department of Homeland Security has taken the lead role in the search for two Afghan men who disappeared while training with the U.S. military at a base in south Georgia.
The men - who were part of a group of 23 from Afghanistan who have been at the base since February - have now been identified as Mirwais Kohistani and Shirzad Rohullah.

Their names and passports were released Thursday as part of a federal investigation to track down the pair, after they failed to show up for training on Monday.

Air Force Lt. Col. Chris Karns said Friday that Homeland Security, in coordination with the U.S. State Department, is leading efforts to locate the men.

 

However officials maintain there is no evidence that either of them pose a threat.

The Air Force said both men were screened before entering the U.S.  

'The students have trained alongside American counterparts for the entirety of 2015 and do not pose any apparent threat,' the Moody Air Force Base told 11 Alive on Tuesday.

'There is a well-coordinated process among federal agencies to locate the individuals as quickly as possible and return them accordingly to the proper authorities to manage their present situation.'

Moody reiterated Thursday that the men still did not pose a threat, even though efforts to find them had been ramped up.

The missing Afghan nationals in Georgia are assigned to the 81st Fighter Squadron, which was re-activated in January and charged with training Afghan airmen.

 

In January, a soldier in the Afghanistan army, who went missing during a training exercise at a military base in Massachusetts, was granted asylum by the US, the AJC reported.

The soldier was one of three Afghans who turned themselves in at a Canadian border crossing in New York state in 2014 after disappearing from an exercise, provoking a search by military officials and state police.
