A youth football coach has been arrested on suspicion of murdering four people in their home before setting fire to the house.
The 33-year-old, named locally as Thomas N, is accused of killing Carla Schauer, her two teenage sons, aged 13 and 19, and the latter's 21-year-old girlfriend.
Investigators say the suspect tricked his way into the Schauers' home in Rupperswil near Zurich on 21 December.
He allegedly forced the mother to bind and gag the other victims before taking her out to withdraw around 11,000 Swiss Francs (£7,600).
When she returned, she was tied up. Then, he reportedly raped the younger son, before cutting the throats of all four then setting fire to the house.
Prosecutors say the local man made a "comprehensive confession" after his arrest on Thursday.
A spokesman for FC Sarmenstorf - the club where he had been a coach - said: "Nobody in the club would have thought Thomas would be capable of this, he was always decent."
Rupperswil mayor Rudolf Hediger said he was relieved that a suspect had been arrested, but said there was "a certain amount of shame and dismay that it was really a member of our village community".
Prosecutor Barbara Loppacher said the suspect is unmarried with no previous convictions or connections to the victims.
She said that police believe he acted alone, and had sexual and financial motivations for the killing.
Police have reportedly matched his DNA and fingerprints to the crime scene, and police chief Markus Gisin said the arrest may have averted further killings.
He said: "Based on yesterday's search of the home, further investigations and questioning, we have to assume that the perpetrator had concrete plans for similar crimes."
