Nigeria’s organized labour has said it would go ahead with its plan to down tools tomorrow (Wednesday) as a result of the federal government’s refusal to kowtow to its demand to revert to the old fuel pump price.
Both the Nigeria Labour Congress,NLC and its affiliate body,the Trade Union Congress,TUC are currently locked in a make or mar parley with officials of the Federal government led by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, SGF, David Babachir Lawal.
It was learnt that the federal government team had for several days met at the SGF’s office to articulate government’s position before Monday night’s parley with labour. Although, journalists were barred from the parley, inside sources said both unions are asking the government to revive the nation’s comatose refineries, increase the minimum wage and also put concrete palliatives in place before a deregulation of the sector.
Earlier slated for 3pm, the meeting started at about 6:30pm with the president, Nigeria Labour Congress, Ayuba Wabba, factional President of NLC,Joe Ajaero,President of National Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers(NUPENG),Igwe Achese, and President, Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of NigeriaNigeria (PENGASSAN),Olabode Johnson in attendance. Others are Minister of Labour and Employment,Senator Chris Ngige,Trade Union Congress(TUC) President, Bobboi Bala Kiagama,NLC General Secretary,Peter Ozo-Eson, Ag. General Secretary of Trade Union Congress, Simeso Amachree among others. Governor of Edo State,Adams Oshiomhole who is a former president of the NLC and several other government officials are also attending the meeting.
The meeting which was summoned at the instance of the SGF is being held to avert the proposed nationwide strike by the Nigeria Labour Congress(NLC) and Trade Union Congress(TUC),scheduled for Wednesday,May 18,2016. Oshiomhole had earlier met with the Vice President Yemi Osinbajo at the Presidential Villa ostensibly to harmonise Federal Government’s position before the parley with labour.
