FOOTBALL: SHERINGHAM WANTS VAN GAAL AXED, SAYS MOURINHO HAS THE BELIEF OF A MANCHESTER UNITED MANAGER

Former Manchester United attacker, Teddy Sheringham says Manchester United should sack Van Gaal this summer and claims Mourinho has the belief necessary to succeed where the Dutchman has failed.

Van Gaal’s position has been the subject of regular debate this season, with United’s early exit from the Champions League and struggles in the Premier League resulting in questions about his future as manager.
Mourinho has been touted as an ideal replacement since his dismissal by Chelsea in December and Sheringham, who netted 46 goals in 153 appearances for United between 1997 and 2001, agrees that it is time for a change.

“I think so,” said Sheringham, speaking at the Wembley leg of Carlsberg’s UEFA EURO 2016™ trophy tour. “Look at how Mauricio Pochettino makes his [Tottenham] players perform, that’s what it’s all about.

“And when you look at Manchester United I think there’s only David de Gea who is performing at the top level. So that answers the question for me.
Sheringham believes Mourinho has the strength of personality to take on the United post and the pressure that comes with it.

“I think Mourinho has the belief that he’s the right manager and that he’s good enough,” he continued. “And that’s half the battle when you manage Man Utd; that you feel like you should be there.”

United have so far made no comment on the future of Van Gaal, who has 15 months remaining on his three-year contract, but Ryan Giggs is known to be favoured by influential figures in the boardroom as a potential successor.

Sheringham, however, says it might be in his former team-mate’s best interests to leave the Red Devils for a less demanding job if he is overlooked again by the United decision-makers.

“He’s obviously part of the plan, but after my little stint in management I would say for him to go out and get some experience at managerial level rather than being a No.2,” added Sheringham.

“It’s a completely different thing, and I believe the experience would be invaluable for someone like Ryan to go and manage somebody else.”

United face Everton at Old Trafford on Sunday looking to keep up the pressure on neighbours Manchester City in the race for fourth spot in the Premier League. Van Gaal’s side currently sit in sixth, one point behind their local rivals.
