Chelsea striker Diego Costa has had his two-match ban extended to three and been fined £20k after admitting a charge of improper conduct following his red card at Everton.
The Spaniard was sent off for the first time in his blues career after being shown two yellow cards for two fouls on Everton’s Gareth Barry in the FA Cup clash Goodison Park last month.
Costa clashed with Barry and motioned towards biting him, although the Everton midfielder later said no contact had been made.
Costa was found to have no case to answer over suggestions he had bitten Barry, or made an inappropriate gesture towards Everton supporters.
But his initial reluctance to leave the pitch, and reaction at the referee’s decision, has earned him the additional ban and fine. The 27-year-old was also warned as to his future conduct.
He has already sat out the 2-2 draw with West Ham at Stamford Bridge on March 19 and will miss the trip at bottom-placed Aston Villa tomorrow. Now he will be absent for the journey to Swansea on April 9.
