But this is the south, and manners still matter.
The six remaining contenders for the Republican nomination seemed to forget that during their ninth debate, which was more gloves off than genteel.
Jeb Bush was left smarting after Trump attacked his brother over Iraq
The two leading candidates - Ted Cruz and Donald Trump - clashed, each hoping to deal the other a fatal blow as they fight to be the outsider-frontrunner of choice.
"You are the single biggest liar! This guy will say anything ... a nasty guy!" shouted Trump.
"Adults learn not to interrupt each other," sneered Cruz in response.
Amid the insults, mainstream candidates tried their best to slow their more conservative, more successful rivals' momentum.
Donald Trump made sure the ninth debate was more gloves off than genteel
Marco Rubio and Ted Cruz, both of Cuban heritage, tried to out-Latino each other, with Cruz challenging Rubio in Spanish at one point.
Possibly the ugliest exchange came between Trump and Jeb Bush, with Trump attacking the legacy of George W Bush - his brother.
Trump branded the Iraq war a "big fat mistake" and pointed out that 9/11 happened on his watch.
The crowd booed and then cheered when, bizarrely, Marco Rubio stepped in to defend George Bush and blame 9/11 on Bill Clinton.
Somewhere off to the side of the stage, John Kasich - who finished second in New Hampshire - suggested Hillary Clinton would win the election if they carried on like this. He was ignored.
John Kasich criticised his rivals for their constant attacks on each other
It did feel, in parts, like a conservative death match, playing out before an ever more anxious mainstream Republican party.
They are watching as the remaining establishment candidates - Rubio, Bush and Kasich - struggle to emerge as a frontrunner and offer their party something to rally behind against Trump and Cruz.
This debate gave them no solace.
On balance, it was probably best for Rubio, who needed to recover after a disastrous last debate that cost him dear in New Hampshire.
As for the manners issue, if Donald Trump was worried about the audience boos for his brash attacks reflecting any discernible drop in support, he wasn't showing it.
