WORLD NEWS: FIJI - 'Terrible' Cyclone Winston Slams Into Fiji

A "terrible" cyclone, feared to be the most powerful to ever hit Fiji, has made landfall.

Cyclone Winston has packed winds of 300 kilometres (186 miles) as it approached the Pacific island nation.

There are unconfirmed reports of one fatality so far, according to the Fiji Times.

One UN official reported that the power in the capital Suva has failed and water supplies are likely to hit next.

"I have palm trees flying all around me at the moment," Alice Clements said.

A nationwide curfew has been imposed and flights suspended as Fijians hunkered down ahead it of its arrival.

However, there are fears the country is not prepared for what Fiji's Prime Minister said could prove to be a "grievous ordeal".

"As a nation, we are facing an ordeal of the most grievous kind. We must stick together as a people and look after each other," Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama said in a statement.

"Be alert and be prepared.

"....I am especially concerned that some people in urban areas of the country in particular do not appear to have heeded the warnings about the seriousness of the threat we all face.

"Let us all pray for our nation, ourselves and each other and ask God's blessing on our beloved Fiji," he added.

Mr Bainimarama urged Fijians to secure their properties and stay inside to avoid flying debris.

He said the Government was "thoroughly prepared" and had set over 750 "fully operational" evacuation centres across the island.
