THE Senate President, Bukola Saraki, has assured that the 2016 budget proposal presently before the National Assembly will not be unduly delayed in the two chambers of Senate and House of Representatives.
Saraki was fielding questions from State House correspondents after he joined delegation of residents of the Federal Capital Territory to pay homage to President Muhammadu Buhari in his official residence at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.
According to the Senate President, the document is a good one aimed at tackling the problems in the country.
He, however, cautioned that bureaucracy should not be allowed to defeat the good intentions of the budget, insisting that it must be implemented to the letter. He said: “You know as we said, we are going to work on the budget as quick as possible. We are conscious of its importance to Nigeria and we are not going to waste time. As soon as we come back, we get down to work and do what we have to do.
“It is a good document, it has addressed the major issues, 70 per cent for recurrent and 30 per cent for infrastructure. The key issue now is implementation. We as a National Assembly will ensure that we get our oversight right.
“By and large, as a document, it is a good document and I am sure it will not have too much difficulty passing through the National Assembly. The key issue is implementation to ensure that bureaucracy does not kill the joy of the implementation of the budget. We will do our part.”
In his message to Nigerians at Christmas, Saraki said that Nigerians have a lot to be thankful for to God for sparing their lives and Nigeria.
Stressing that the National Assembly is not new to the challenges facing the nation, the Senate president said it will continue to address the problems including security, economy and fight against corruption.
