Scores of civilians were reportedly killed during a gun battle between Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF) members and Boko Haram terrorists who attempted to overrun the Borno State capital Maiduguri Sunday evening, according to Sahara Reporters.
The terrorists drove to Maiduguri in utility vehicles attacking the High Court area around 6:23pm and launched RPG grenades into the city thereafter. Boko Haram terrorists were specifically targeting civilians and residents as they fled the area for their lives.
A top Civilian JTF commander in the area told SaharaReporters that some terrorists around Jidari Polo area of Maiduguri were killed during the gun battle.
He said ''they attacked Polo area in Maiduguri. In fact we are chasing them now and some of them were killed.”
A Jidari Polo resident, Mohammed Kolo, told SaharaReporters that they were only about 100 meters away from him when they opened up fire.
Another resident named Bitrus Yohana said ''we were confused, as I am speaking with you our doors are opened. We didn't remember to close it as a result of loud explosions, many people were killed because of the shooting.”
Earlier Boko Haram attacked Molai area near the NNPC Mega station in Maiduguri before proceeding to attack Jidari Polo area thorough old Molai road in Maiduguri.
