NEWS: NIGERIA - National Assembly not aware of electricity tariff hike –Gbajabiamila

Majority Leader of the House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila disclosed yesterday that National Assembly is unaware of the recent hike in electricity tariff by the National Energy Regulatory Commission (NERC).

He also said the House is in the dark about the planned removal of fuel subsidy in 2016.
Gbajabiamila also said federal lawmakers must accept major responsibility for the profligacy that took place in the immediate past administration of president Goodluck Jonathan.

The House leader said this at a press conference in Lagos, yesterday, where he presented the score sheet of the House in the last six months.

He said the present House of Representatives intends to “redress this national embarrassment.”

Besides, he said the House will step up its over-sight functions and investigate issues relating to the development of the country’s economy.

Fielding questions from newsmen, the House leader said the executive arm of government “has not communicated its position to the National Assembly,” adding that there were many things that need to be done before fuel subsidy is removed.

However, Gbajabiamila said there is going to be a debate on the removal of subsidy on the floor of the House if the issue comes up.

Speaking on the activities of the House in the past six months, he said despite the initial hiccups in the lower chamber, federal lawmakers have done very well.

According to him, since the inauguration of the House on June 9 to date, a total of 327 bills were sponsored, while several motions were passed, noting that this was against 132 bills presented within the first six months of the last Assembly.

He explained that out of the number, 264 bills have passed through first reading and awaiting second reading,” while 40 bills have been referred to committees.”

The House leader added that the bills presented and resolutions passed were geared towards addressing the issues of insecurity, unemployment, and economic reform, reform in the oil and gas sector of the economy.
