Manchester City had held talks with the agents of Lionel Messi and Neymar in the summer with a view to signing them from Barcelona, The Sun reports.
A total of three meetings took place between the Etihad outfit and the star duo's representatives before they were deemed out of reach, but the club could return again next year.
City owner Sheikh Mansour is reportedly prepared to bankroll a signing spree next summer conditional to Pep Guardiola leading them to the Premier League crown.
And Messi, whose contract at Barcelona will only have a year left to run in 2017 provided he does not renew it, could represent a viable target then.
