Smart glasses 'will be as popular as mobile phones'

Augmented reality glasses will be as popular as laptops and mobile phones in as little as 10 years, according to a leading manufacturer of the technology.
Alberto Torres, the chief executive of Atheer, a company making 3D interactive smart glasses, told Sky News the trend will initially move faster with professionals who work in the field, like medical workers or service engineers.

"I believe that longer term, smart glasses are going to become a primary form of computing," he said.
"It's the new wave of mobile computing."
Augmented reality (AR) allows users to see the real environment while also displaying images on top of that - ones that could be used for guidance or instructions in completing a task or carrying out a repair job, for example.
Last year Microsoft revealed its augmented reality Hololens was being used to help medical students study anatomy, enabling them to see holographic layers of the human body.
Augmented reality is not virtual reality (VR). VR involves a headset that immerses you in a totally different environment.
Its wide-ranging uses span from video gaming, to helping train military medics, to bringing museum exhibits to life for children.
Apple chief executive Tim Cook suggested in an interview this week that he thought augmented reality would become commercially more popular than virtual reality.
He told Good Morning America: "My own view is that augmented reality is the larger of the two, probably by far, because this gives the capability for both of us to sit and be very present talking to each other, but also have other things visually for both of us to see."
Apple fans have been speculating over the tech giant's potential plans for entering the VR and AR market for some time.
Mr Torres believes AR glasses have the potential to eventually replace laptops, but concedes there are challenges that need to be worked through.
"Smart glasses are in the early stages of development... they are a little expensive, they are a little bulky ... they are not for everyone yet."
