Two bailiffs have been killed and a deputy sheriff wounded in a shooting at a courthouse in Michigan.
Buildings surrounding the court in Berrien County were put on lockdown following the attack, which began at about 2.25pm local time (7.25pm UK time).
The suspect was killed by officers in the courthouse.
Reports suggest the shooter was on their way to jail when they seized a deputy sheriff's gun and started opening fire.
Berrien County Sheriff Paul Bailey confirmed the three deaths at a news conference, and said the death of his "brave" colleagues was "terrible".
The injured sheriff is in a stable condition in hospital, while a civilian who was hurt is in an unknown condition.
Governor Rick Snyder said: "MSP (Michigan State Police) has secured the scene at the Berrien County courthouse and started its investigation into the shooting that occurred this afternoon."
Berrien County is in St Joseph, a city in southwest Michigan which is about 100 miles away from Chicago.
