Nigeria - AGF explains why alleged forgery charges were brought against the senate, says no going back

Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami Wednesday appeared before the Senate Committee on Judiciary, Human Rights and Legal Matters, saying that the the trial of Senate President Bukola Saraki, his Deputy Senate President, Senator Ike Ekweremadu and two others to court over alleged forgery of the Senate Standing Order would continue as there was no going back on the matter.

According to him, as the law enforcement officer of the country, he has the duty to institute a criminal trial against anybody. The Minister who failed to answer to issues raised on the proof of evidence against Saraki and Ekweremadu as their names were not mentioned by witnesses in the proof of evidence that was brought against them, said that he could not comment on that as it amounts to subjudice as the matter was still in court.

Speaking Wednesday when he appeared before the Senator David Umaru, All Progressives Congress, APC, Niger East led Committee, Malami who noted that the amendment of the 2015 Standing Order was carried out illegally, said that the issue that constitute the basis of this invitation was a criminal case instituted against certain members of the Senate prior to his becoming the Minister.

“The issue that constitute the basis of this invitation is a criminal case instituted against certain members of the Senate. It is an act that predates my appointment. There are series of suits. The date of interest is 23rd of July, 2015. he said.
