A pilot of the Russian air force's elite aerobatic squadron died when the fighter jet he was flying crashed outside Moscow.
Russia's defence ministry confirmed the Su-27 jet went down while returning to its base in Kubinka, west of Moscow.
Earlier reports that the jet was from the Russian Knights display team - the country's equivalent of the Red Arrows - were confirmed and the pilot was named as team member Sergei Yeryomenko.
The jet ploughed into the ground some 21 miles northeast of the capital as it was flying in formation with five other planes.
Reports say the crash occurred after a demonstration flight marking the opening of a monument to airmen near Moscow.
Preliminary information reports the crash was caused by a technical problem - the plane is understood to have recently undergone factory repairs.
The ministry refused to give further information, pending an official investigation.
This is not the first time Russia's leading aerobatic display team has suffered a fatality.
One of the group's pilots was killed in 2009 in a collision between two jets as they were rehearsing for an air show outside Moscow.
And, in 1995, four members died after three of the group's jets crashed into a mountain during bad weather in Vietnam.
