Republican presidential hopeful Donald Trump has described The Boston Globe as "worthless" and "stupid" after it published a front page imagining life under his leadership.
Other stories include the halting of border wall construction after Mexico's refusal to pay for it, the sinking of markets due to an "imminent trade war" with Mexico and China, soldiers refusing orders to kill ISIS families and "New libel laws" targeting "'absolute scum' in the press".
In an editorial, The Globe said the front page was "an exercise in taking a man at his word," adding that Mr Trump's "vision of America promises to be as appalling in real life as it is in black and white on the page".
"It is a vision that demands an active and engaged opposition. It requires an opposition as focused on denying Trump the White House as the candidate is flippant and reckless about securing it," they added.
Mr Trump addressed the issue during a rally on Sunday in Rochester, New York.
He said: "How about that stupid Boston Globe? It's worthless, sold for a dollar.
"They pretended Trump is the president and they made up, the whole front page is a make-believe story, which is really no different from the whole paper."
The Boston Globe was awarded a Pulitzer Prize for public service after a 2002 investigation uncovered the widespread sexual abuse of children by many of the district's Catholic clergy.
The Spotlight team's investigation, which was depicted in last year's Oscar-winning film Spotlight, also revealed a cover-up whereby priests accused of misconduct were systematically moved to other parishes.
