Three people have been injured and several others may have become trapped after a building collapsed in Los Cristianos, Tenerife.
El Espanol newspaper reported that the four-storey building came down at around 9:30am local time.
The paper said as many as nine people may have been trapped, according to a local government source.
Emergency services said the injured were two women and a man.
One of the women had been seriously hurt.
Earlier reports suggested someone had died, but there was no official confirmation.
Spanish police said it was unclear how many people had been inside the apartment building when it collapsed.
An officer said it was not known why the structure - located in the central area of the southern coastal town - had come down.
Local police evacuated nearby properties in case there had been a gas leak.
Firefighters are working to clear the rubble.
One eyewitness told El Espanol there was a loud bang, and then half the building collapsed.
Video footage showed debris strewn across the road.
Work was apparently being carried out to reopen a business in the building.
But the renovations reportedly stopped two weeks ago after serious cracks were discovered.
