Serbian authorities are investigating reports that a US-bound cargo package containing two laser-guided missiles was found on a passenger airline.
N1 television said the two AGM-114 Hellfire missiles were discovered on Saturday by a sniffer dog after an Air Serbia flight from Beirut landed at Belgrade Nikola Tesla Airport.
Serbian state news agency Tanjug reported that the missiles, which cost around $110,000 each, had been packed inside wooden crates.
Documents with the package listed the final destination for the package as Portland, Oregon.
A source at the prosecutor's office in Serbia told Reuters the missiles had been due to be transferred to another plane.
The source told the news agency: "Experts are determining whether the missiles were equipped with live or training warheads.
"They were packed in proper transportation crates and supplied with paperwork which is also being scrutinised."
Lebanese security services said the two Hellfires were training missiles used by the Lebanese army and were being returned to the US.
US and Lebanese authorities were aware of the shipment and the missiles posed no threat to the public, a source told Reuters.
The FBI in Portland said it was looking into the reports.
Spokeswoman Jennifer Adams said: "We don't have any information on that yet."
The US-made Hellfire missiles can be fired from air, sea or ground platforms.
Air Serbia is co-operating with the investigation. The Serbian airline said "security and safety are the main priorities for Air Serbia".
In January, a Hellfire missile sent to Europe for a NATO training exercise was mistakenly shipped back to Cuba.
That missile was retrieved by US officials and representatives from Lockheed Martin, which manufactures the weapon, last month.
