Four people have been killed after a suicide bombing in Istanbul's main shopping street, the city's governor has said.
Vasip Sahin said 20 people were injured, three of them seriously, in the blast outside a local government office on Istiklal Caddesi, which is lined with shops, cafes, restaurants and foreign consulates.
"This is a suicide attack, a terrorist attack," he said at the scene, saying the bomber was also killed.
Israeli citizens are among the wounded, an Israeli Foreign Ministry spokesman said.
A witness told the Reuters news agency they saw police helicopters circling overhead, and television footage showed people running from the scene.
Police have sealed off part of the street, which adjoins Taksim Square in the European part of the city, and a forensic team is at the scene.
It comes as Turkey is on edge after two suicide bombings in the capital, Ankara, including one earlier this month that killed 37 people.
Another attack in the city in February killed 29 people.
Both of those attacks were claimed by a Kurdish militant group that is an off-shoot of the outlawed Kurdistan Workers' Party, or PKK.
Turkey, which has been hit by five major bombings since July, has been on high alert for further attacks ahead of Kurdish New Year celebrations on Monday.
