Fights as Edo State Assembly Speaker Okonoboh impeached and replaced by Adjoto

Nigeria - The Speaker of the Edo State House of Assembly, Hon. Justin Okonoboh, was on Monday impeached by the lawmakers.

Okonoboh was the third Speaker to be removed since the current Assembly was inaugurated in 2015.

He was impeached for being selfish and running the Assembly like a family business.

The impeached speaker was accused of awarding contracts to himself and making his wife the 25th member of the House.

On a dramatic note, a lawmaker that wanted to resist the impeachment, Ezehi Igbas, representing Esan North East II, was beaten to stupor by members of the Assembly.

Meanwhile, the lawmaker representing Akoko-Edo I State Constituency, Kabiru Adjoto, has been elected the new Speaker of the Edo State House of Assembly.

Adjoto would be the fourth Speaker to preside over the Assembly since 2015.

Former Speaker, Victor Edoror, who was impeached in 2016 over alleged high-handedness, dictatorial tendencies and financial recklessness, was elected the Deputy Speaker while Roland Asoro was made Majority Leader.

Adjoto was elected Speaker by 16 lawmakers after a vote of no confidence was passed on Okonoboh.

The new Speaker has set up a three-man panel to probe Okonoboh’s tenure.
