Spanish police shot dead five terror suspects in the Catalan down of Cambrils early Friday hours after a van crashed into pedestrians in Barcelona's city centre, killing at least 13 people.
Police in Barcelona said a white van jumped a sidewalk before ploughing into a crowd in the city's busy Las Ramblas district.
At least 13 people were killed and more than 100 others were injured, Catalan government officials said.
The Islamic State group claimed responsibility for the attack via its Amaq propaganda outlet.
Catalan police have confirmed the arrest of two suspects, though neither are understood to be the driver of the van who remains at large.
Police said they believe the attack was linked to an explosion at a house in the town of Alcanar, 125 miles south of Barcelona, in the early hours of Thursday that killed one person.
The explosion was caused by an attempt to assemble an explosive device on the premises, police said.
Hours later, a second suspected terror attack took place in the town of Cambrils, around 70 miles south of Barcelona, where a car reportedly crashed into pedestrians.
Police then shot dead four attacker and severely injured a fifth, who died shortly afterwards. Six civilians and one police officer were injured.
