According to eyewitnesses, a live electric cable had dropped in the body of water she was trying to cross as a result of a pole that fell a day earlier. She died on the spot.
Men of the Port Harcourt Electricity Distribution Company were contacted on the day the pole fell but nothing had been done to rectify it, Victor Idaye Briggs who posted a photo of the deceased at the scene on Facebook noted.
A disturbing rise in the case of electrocution to death from fallen electric cables has been observed in recent times.
On May 7, a seven-year-old child, identified as Stanley Bobo was electrocuted to death by a service cable which fell at Omo-Iyamu street, off Country Home Motel road, off Sapele road, Benin City. Barely a month after, a three-year-old identified as Chidi Danielwas also killed in Gombe street, Wadata, Makurdi, Benue State after an electric power cable fell off a pole and struck him.
The most tragic of the recent cases is the electrocution of fans watching football at a Calabar football viewing center. Seven persons died, while 11 others sustained serious injuries in the incident which occurred on April 20.
