WORLD NEWS: TECH - Arrested Facebook top executive ordered to be released by court

A Facebook executive arrested in Brazil is due to be released after a day behind bars.

The social network's Latin America vice president Diego Dzodan was taken into custody at Guarulhos airport on Tuesday.

The arrest was related to a dispute over a court order demanding data from the company's WhatsApp messaging service in a drug-trafficking investigation, which WhatsApp refused.

But a press officer for the court in Sergipe state which is handling the case said he would likely be released in Sao Paulo within hours.

Previously, a lower court imposed daily fines on Facebook plus the arrest order after WhatsApp refused to hand over messages related to a drug trafficking ring.

But a judge has now overturned that decision.

Facebook - which owns WhatsApp - had called the arrest "extreme and disproportionate".

It said that Mr Dzodan should not be held responsible because WhatsApp operates independently of Facebook, and has no staff based in the country.

It has also repeatedly pointed out that Whatsapp does not store content, which is encrypted by users at either end.

Meanwhile, Facebook faces more legal woe in Germany - where is being investigation for suspected abuse of market power.

The country's cartel office says Facebook's terms of service may abuse its possibly dominant position in the social networking market.

The regulator says it is difficult for users to understand the scope of the agreement.
