A Briton has died after collapsing close to the finishing line of a marathon in Malta, Sky sources have confirmed.
The 55-year-old man became ill near the end of the 2016 Vodafone Malta Marathon in the popular seaside town of Sliema.
The athlete was said to have collapsed less than a mile from the finish, according to local newspaper reports.
The runner, who has not been identified, collapsed at about 11.30am and died shortly after arriving at Mater Dei Hospital, Malta Today reported.
An autopsy is due to be held on Monday.
Media reports in the country said the man was accompanied by his wife during the event, and that a doctor had given him the all-clear to take part in the race after he had complained of chest pains two weeks ago.
A Foreign and Commonwealth Office spokesman said: "Our thoughts are with the family of a British man who died in Malta on 28 February.
"We stand ready to assist them at this difficult time."
More than 4,300 people from across the world, including 160 from the UK, took part in the marathon, half marathon and walkathlon, the race website said.
The event was being held for the 31st time.
