WORLD NEWS: US ELECTION 2016 - HILLARY CLINTON IN POLL POSITION IN SUPER TUESDAY

Democratic presidential front runner Hillary Clinton has notched up seven victories, according to projections on the biggest night of the US election campaign.

The former Secretary of State looks to have swept primary votes in Georgia, Virginia, Alabama, Tennessee, Texas, Massachusetts and her former home state of Arkansas.

But her Democratic rival, Bernie Sanders, has won primaries in Oklahoma and his home state of Vermont, along with caucuses in Minnesota and Colorado, exit polls say.

In the Republican race, front runner Donald Trump is projected to have won six states.

Nominating contests have been held on Super Tuesday in 12 US states ahead of November's presidential election.

The eventual winner will succeed President Barack Obama, who cannot run for re-election after two terms in office.

Mrs Clinton and Mr Trump are aiming for sweeping victories that could give them an unassailable lead over their rivals.

The candidates are vying to win delegates who will vote for them at their parties' conventions in July.

Mrs Clinton - who won three of the first four Democratic contests this year - has been leading Mr Sanders with 548 delegates to his 87. Another 865 delegates are up for grabs on Super Tuesday.

Some 2,383 delegates in total are needed for the Democratic party's White House nomination.

Mrs Clinton, who seeks to become America's first female president, has been facing an unexpectedly strong challenge from Mr Sanders, a Vermont senator.

But as she tightens her grip on the Democratic race, she has increasingly turned her attention to Mr Trump, who has proposed to build a wall on the US border with Mexico.

"Instead of building walls, we're going to break down barriers," she told a victory rally in Miami, Florida.

"Rhetoric on the other side has never been lower."

Mr Sanders, a self-described democratic socialist who has galvanised young voters by calling for a political revolution, has been seeking to stay competitive.

But opinion polls showed the former US first lady with a big lead in six Southern states that have large blocs of black voters, who have been slow to warm to Mr Sanders.

Exit polls from Tuesday suggested Mrs Clinton drew support from a large majority of voters who cared most about a candidate who can win in November.

Among those who said they cared most about a candidate being honest and trustworthy, most voters in Virginia and Georgia supported Mr Sanders.
