A man has been injured after shots were fired by armed police in Hull city centre.
The shooting took place after officers were dispatched to Holderness Road "following reports of concerns for the safety of the public in relation to a man" near a post office.
The 31-year-old, who has not been named, is receiving medical attention.
A man near the scene, who did not want to be named, said he believed the injured man was his cousin who suffers from mental health issues and has problems with drugs.
"All I've heard is one of my friends rang me and said 'Your cousin's been running around with an axe and he's been Tasered and they've shot him'. That's all I know," he said.
Passerby Paul Storr described seeing "police everywhere" on Francis Street and other witnesses reported seeing an injured man in the street with an axe after hearing loud gunshots.
Large screens have been erected in a nearby car park and forensics officers are examining the area.
A police spokesperson said: "An investigation is under way and the incident has been referred to the Independent Police Complaints Commission, which is standard practice in such incidents.
"We are not looking for anyone else in connection with the incident at this time."
