Gareth Southgate has signed a four-year deal to become England manager, the FA has confirmed.
It said its selection panel had "unanimously agreed that he was the outstanding candidate for the role having impressed during his four-game period as interim manager".
Southgate has been in charge since the scandal that forced Sam Allardyce to resign after one game.
England have been unbeaten while he has been in charge, defeating Malta and Scotland, and drawing against Slovenia and Spain.
"I am extremely proud to be appointed England manager," said the new England boss.
"However, I'm also conscious that getting the job is one thing, now I want to do the job successfully.
"I've thoroughly enjoyed working with the players over these past four games and I think there's huge potential.
"I'm determined to give everything I have to give the country a team that they're proud of and one that they're going to enjoy watching play and develop. For me, the hard work starts now."
The team are currently top of their qualifying group for the 2018 World Cup, two points clear of Slovenia.
FA Chief Executive Martin Glenn said they were "delighted" to give Southgate the job and that he "impressed us during a tough interview process".
Mr Glenn also called him a "great ambassador for what the FA stands for".
