One person has been killed and three injured by two almost simultaneous explosions near Tokyo.
The blasts - in a public park and a car park - occurred just after 11.30am (3.30am UK time) in Utsunomiya, about 60 miles north of Japan's capital.
Public broadcaster NHK quoted police as saying a suicide note had been found in one of the three cars that were burnt but they said the cause of the explosions was not known.
According to NHK, police said one of the vehicles belonged to a 72-year-old former self defence officer who lived in the city and whose house was burned down earlier in the day.
He had not been heard from since.
One of those injured, a man, is being treated for shrapnel wounds.
The second explosion saw a car catch fire in a car park about 200 metres from the first blast. No one was injured there.
The park was hosting a folk art festival at the time.
