Deaths from ovarian cancer in the UK have fallen 22% in 10 years thanks to use of the contraceptive pill, according to scientists.
In 2002, 7.51 out of every 100,000 women in Britain died from the disease.
But that rate fell to 5.86 deaths 10 years later, according to figures published in the journal Annals of Oncology.
That downward trend is expected to continue until at least 2020, according to researchers.
The UK figures used World Health Organisation data to analyse ovarian cancer death rates across the globe between 1970 and 2012.
It noted a decline in death rates worldwide, but the trend varied significantly between different countries.
Some, including Bulgaria, Brazil and Columbia, showed that the number of women dying from ovarian cancer had increased.
The study also found that a possible decline in the use of hormone replacement therapy for menopause could also be behind the decline in deaths.
It said: "The main reason for the favourable trends is the use of oral contraceptives (OCs), particularly in the USA and countries of the EU where OCs were introduced earlier.
"Declines in menopausal hormone use may also have played a favourable role in elderly women, as well as improved diagnosis, management and treatment."
By 2020, the authors of the study predicted that 4.8 women out of every 100,000 across Europe will die from the disease.
