A mother has fought off a mountain lion that attacked her five-year-old son as he played outside their home in Colorado.
The woman ran out of the house in Pitkin County, near Aspen, when she heard the child's screams on Friday evening and pulled her son from the animal's clutches.
The boy, who has not been named, was taken to hospital in Denver with head, neck and face injuries.
He is described as being in a "fair condition".
The mother suffered injuries to her hands and legs.
Pitkin sheriff's deputies and officials from the US forest service were sent to the house and spotted a mountain lion still in the front yard.
The animal was put down and the body will be examined by officials from Colorado Parks and Wildlife.
The authorities were attempting to find a second lion that was reported to be in the area earlier in the day.
There have been three fatal mountain lion attacks in Colorado since 1991.
