Football - De Gea breaks 50-year-old clean sheet record

David De Gea broke a 50-year-old record set by Gordon Banks in Spain’s 3-0 victory over Turkey at Euro 2016.

The Manchester United goalkeeper had kept clean sheets in his first four competitive games against Luxembourg, Macedonia, Ukraine and Czech Republic and secured a fifth in Friday’s win.

Banks made his competitive debut for England against Uruguay in 1966 and managed to keep a clean sheet, before doing the same in wins over Mexico, France and Argentina.
But after 442 minutes, Banks was finally beaten in the World Cup semi-final as Eusebio scored a penalty, although England went on to win the game 2-1.
Alvaro Morata’s double and Nolito’s strike sealed the 3-0 victory over Turkey to put Spain back at the top of Group D and safely through to the last 16.
