A gunman is believed to have been shot dead by police after barricading himself in a Walmart store with at least one hostage.
Officers were sent to the scene in Amarillo, Texas after a reported shooting.
A number of people were evacuated from the store.
A SWAT team then went into the building searching for the suspect and opened fire on him.
No-one else is believed to have been injured or killed in the incident which is thought to be workplace-related.
Police earlier said they had secured the outer perimeter of the store which is located on Canyon Drive and Georgia.
At least one gunshot was fired, an eyewitness was reported as saying.
A statement from the city of Amarillo had said emergency officials were "on the scene of an active shooter incident" at the store.
Police shut down the I-27 road and the northbound side of Georgia.
People are being told to avoid the area so officers can focus on the scene and not traffic.
