North Korea has fired two short-range ballistic missiles into the Sea of Japan, according to reports.
They were launched from the port city of Wonsan and flew around 300 miles (500km), according to South Korea's Yonhap news agency.
It came hours after North Korea's leader Kim Jong-Un said his military had successfully miniaturised nuclear warheads which can be mounted on ballistic missiles.
He has reportedly called for his forces to be on standby to mount pre-emptive attacks against South Korea and the US - and be prepared to use nuclear weapons.
The North fired six high-calibre rockets into the sea a week ago in protest at tough, new sanctions by the UN Security Council.
The sanctions were imposed after Pyongyang carried out its fourth nuclear test in January, and launched a long-range rocket last month.
Tensions rose this week after South Korea and the US launched joint military exercises.
The North called the drills "nuclear war moves" and threatened to respond with an all-out offensive.
Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi discussed the developments with US Secretary of State John Kerry on Wednesday, and described the situation on the Korean peninsula as "very tense".
