Sir Paul McCartney has written a series of sounds to go with emojis on video chat service Skype.
The former Beatle created ultra-brief tunes for 20 emoticons using instruments including a guitar and xylophone.
The animated designs are being released by the Microsoft-owned communication service in time for Valentine's Day.
Sir Paul said the project was challenging, because he had to fit "a musical interpretation of an emotion into less than five seconds".
"It was like doing a huge crossword puzzle and coming up with all these solutions," he said.
"And at the same time it was musical so it was great practice for me in the studio."
Speaking about the moment he was approached for the project, he said it was a "strange proposition" but it piqued his interest.
"At first I thought 'hmm, strange proposition, is this for me?' And then I thought 'you know what, why not?'
"Something fun, something nice and new."
The 73-year-old said he uses emojis in his own messages to friends and family.
He is known for his musical experimentation - he recently crossed genres to record a track with rapper Kanye West.
He has also written computer game scores and classical pieces.
