The dust raised by Nnewi factory fire of December 24, last year in Anambra State had barely settled when, yesterday, a filling station at Amuko junction, Nnewichi in Nnewi went up in flames. No life was, however, lost except for very few people who sustained minor injuries while running for safety.
The fire, which started at about 6:20a.m., according to an eyewitness, would have been controlled if fire fighters were around early “and even those who later came, had no water in their tanks since they were borrowing gallons of water from people around the area.”
Our source said the fire might have been caused by the fact that a fuel tanker was dispensing while sale of petrol was in progress. One of the cars refilling at the time of the incident got burnt completely as well as the tanker.
Two adjoining residential buildings were partially burnt while roadside retail traders who displayed their goods outside their shops lost some of them when the fuel flowed through the gutter burning as it moved.
The member representing Nnewi North in the House of Assembly, Amala Anazodo said he got a distress call while the fire raged and rushed to two fire stations within the Awka capital territory but was disappointed that he did not get any quick response from any of them. Okpoko Fire Service which eventually came did not have enough water to put out the fire. Sole Administrator of Nnewi North Council, Chief Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu (jnr) was seen making hasty movements around the scene as he told reporters that he was going back to his office to get chemicals to fight the fire.
When contacted, Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Anambra State Command, Mr. Ali Okechukwu ((DSP) confirmed there was no casualty.
