NEWS: NIGERIA - Army/Shiíte Clash: AGF tasks Islamic clerics on sensitisation of followers

The Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, SAN, has advised Islamic leaders to ensure they preach peaceful co-existence and issues of individuals’ right in society as contained in the Sunnah of the Holy Prophet, PBUH, to their followers.

The minister gave the advice while receiving a delegation of the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, who paid a visit on him in his office.

In a statement by Comrade Salihu Othman Isah, the Special Adviser on Media and Publicity to the Attorney General made available to the media yesterday in Abuja, Malami described the clash between the Islamic Movement of Nigeria, IMN, otherwise known as Shiites and the Nigerian Army in Zaria as unfortunate and sad.

The Attorney General noted that the clash was an avoidable incident, stressing that a revisit to the incident is important to see how it can be managed to stem further reoccurrence.

On the request by the 10 man delegation led by Professor Daud Noibi, chairman of the Nigeria Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs, NSCIA’s Contact Committee for the AGF to intervene on how Sheikh Ibrahim El-Zakzaky, the leader of the Shiites and his injured members could be released, Malami enjoined the Council to formalise their demands to the Federal Government because of the sensitivity of the issue.

“I will do whatever I can within the confines of the law to see how an amicable resolve can be achieved. So when your demands is formalised, I will treat and facilitate it to the appropriate quarters accordingly.”

He further hinted that though he would not engage in blame games, it was however necessary for clerics to teach their followers on good conducts and how to co-exist with their neighbours, especially the teachings on the right of way which the Muslim Ummah are compelled to respect.

According to him, “As Muslims, we know what is obtainable in Islam especially in the area of rights, individuals rights, especially rights of way. As Muslims, we have a collective responsibility to create awareness through our preaching on tolerance and compliance according to the dictates of Islam.
