NEWS: NIGERIA - Navy impounds 20 vessels, crew

Nigeria Navy has arrested 20 vessels alleged to be involved in various maritime crimes within the country’s territorial waters.

Chief of Naval staff, Vice Admiral Ibok Ibas, made this revelation shortly after embarking on the 2015 Nigerian Navy sea exercise code named Exercise Treasure Guard. He explained that 149
illegal oil refineries, 19 barges and 75 wooden boats had been so far destroyed, adding that the effort of the Navy to tackle crude oil theft had put crude oil thieves on the defensive.

Ibas further disclosed that five capital ships would be deployed to the sea daily to carry out routine patrol, while 65 boats of various sizes would also be on patrol of the creeks in search of vandals and crude oil thieves.

According to him, 70 additional boats are also being expected from Sri-Lanka to join the fleet of the force in the first quarter of 2016.

His words: “The NN has therefore been focusing on various operations aimed at combating the myriads of criminalities and illegal activities in the nation’s maritime domain.”

“From July 15 to date, the NN has arrested 20 vessels and their crew. Furthermore, over 149 illegal oil refineries, 19 barges, 75 large wooden boats and 93 auxiliary equipments were destroyed within the same period.” Vice Admiral Ibas who commended President Muhammadu Buhari for supporting the Navy promised to work with the federal legislature to ensure the success of the change agenda of the present administration.
