About 3,000 tanker drivers besiege Lagos State daily to get imported fuel and consequently cause gridlock in different parts of the state.
Sector commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Lagos, Mr. Hyginus Umeje disclosed this to Daily Sun yesterday in his office while speaking on the efforts of the corps for the Yuletide.
He attributed the crisis to the ongoing problem in the oil sector and lack of enough provisions for parking lots for the tankers by the oil depot operators in Apapa and Tin Can Island areas.
The problems cause the tanker drivers to park their vehicles along the roads, causing traffic pollution and attending crises.
He lamented over the efforts his command has made to end the problem, saying it was a national problem.
He cited the bad condition of the Oshodi/Apapa Express Road, failure to develop and use both railways and waterways as other causes of the persistent gridlock.
The FRSC boss disclosed that the corps have started its “Operation Zero Tolerance To Road Crash” and consequently directed his men and officers to concentrate on critical traffic areas in the state.
Those critical traffic areas Include Lagos/Ibadan Express Road, Mile 2/Badagry Express Road and Lekki/Epe Express Road which often have extremely heavy traffic congestion because of the high number of motorists that ply the roads to move out and come into the state.
He warned drivers against over speeding, phoning while driving, over loading and driving after drinking.
