Scare as Lassa Fever returns, hits Kogi and Ebonyi

Nigeria - Lassa fever has broken out in Ebonyi and Kogi states. So far, the infection had killed four citizens, including two doctors. As at the time of writing, there are already nine persons receiving treatment and 139 others under active surveillance. 

As expected, the Federal Ministry of Health has alerted WHO about the outbreak of Lassa fever and has provided support to states with cases of confirmed infection.

Former international football star George Weah was sworn in as Liberia’s new president on Monday, in the country’s first transition between democratically-elected leaders since 1944.

Weah, 51, took over from Nobel laureate Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, who spent 12 years at the helm, steering the West African nation away from the trauma of a civil war.

Five killed by police at Ethiopian religious festival

At least five people have been killed in northern Ethiopia after security forces fired on a crowd at a religious festival who were reportedly shouting anti-government slogans.

Many more were injured in the incident in the town of Waldiya. Angry protesters have blocked roads and businesses are closed.

A US court in Fort Bend County, Houston, Texas, has convicted a Nigerian, Osa Alohaneke, for the 2015 stabbing to death of his fiancée.

A jury found him guilty on Friday of the slaying of Evelyne Ebane Epiepang. The jury is yet to determine his sentence.

Iraq condemns German woman to death for belonging to IS

An Iraqi court said Sunday it had condemned to death by hanging a German woman of Moroccan origin after finding her guilty of belonging to the Islamic State jihadist group.

She is one of hundreds of foreign jihadists held by Iraqi authorities, who in December announced the defeat of IS after a gruelling three-year battle.

The Jama’atu Nasril Islam, JNI, has lambasted the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) over a comments by its secretary, Musa Asake. The JNI, a coalition of Islamic organisations, is headed by the Sultan of Sokoto, Saad Abubakar.

The coalition, in a statement by its secretary, Khalid Aliyu, accused Asake of trying to smear Islam and Muslims.

Nigeria - The peace deal brokered between the ‘Fresh PDP’ and the leadership of the Uche Secondus-led Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has hit the rocks, barely 24 hours after it was brokered.

A former national chairman of the PDP, Dr. Okwesilieze Nwodo, had, on Saturday, presided over a marathon truce meeting with purported leaders of the ‘Fresh PDP’ and a few chieftains of the PDP where the two parties in dispute openly declared an end to hostilities.

Women's US March draws thousands as President Trump enters second year of term

Tens of thousands of people took to the streets of US cities on Saturday for a second Women's March opposing President Donald Trump on the first anniversary of his inauguration.

The coordinated rallies in Washington, New York, Los Angeles, Chicago and about 250 other cities are a reprise of the mass protests that marked the beginning of Trump's presidency. Sister rallies were also planned in Britain, Japan and other countries.

The family of the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, Nmandi Kanu, has called on the military to provide their brother-Kanu and their parents, HRH, Eze Kanu and his wife dead or alive.

Spokesperson for the family, Prince Emmanuel Kanu, told the Sun that they have been asking the Nigerian authorities to produce Nnamdi Kanu and their parents.

Nigeria - Primate Elijah Ayodele, founder and Spiritual leader of INRI Evangelical and Spiritual Church, Oke Afa, Isolo, Lagos, Primate Elijah Ayodele, has insisted that President Muhammadu Buhari will win in 2019, if the All Progressives Congress, APC, fields him during the election.

Explaining his 220-page book, titled, ‘Warnings to the Nations (WTN), 2017/2018 edition in Lagos, Ayodele said Buhari’s chances at the polls are bright but warned the president against not doing things properly.
