How George Weah was sworn in as Liberian president

Former international football star George Weah was sworn in as Liberia’s new president on Monday, in the country’s first transition between democratically-elected leaders since 1944.
Weah, 51, took over from Nobel laureate Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, who spent 12 years at the helm, steering the West African nation away from the trauma of a civil war.

Former World Footballer of the Year, George Weah, has reacted to news of his declaration as winner of Tuesday’s presidential run-off in his country, Liberia.

That country’s National Elections Commission on Thursday evening declared the former footballer and candidate of the opposition Congress for Democratic Change (CDC) as scoring 720,023 votes, which is 61.5 percent of 98 percent total votes cast at the election.

Liberian election set for runoff as George Weah fails to win 50% votes

The presidential election in Liberia is set for a runoff as none of the candidates will be able to score 50 per cent of votes after final tabulation of results.

As at 9 p.m. Nigerian time, results in 95.6 per cent of the polling units had been announced by the National Elections Commission of Liberia. Of the 5,390 polling places, results have been announced in 5,151 polling places.

One of Liberia's largest political parties called for a halt to counting votes from the country's presidential election Thursday, alleging irregularities and fraud as ex-soccer star George Weah took an early lead based on partial provisional results.

Angry Liberty Party supporters who gathered at the party's headquarters claimed polls in the West African nation opened late and that ballot-tampering occurred in at least one location in the capital, Monrovia.

Right! Liberia bars official travel for two months to cut costs



Liberian President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf has barred all official visits abroad for two months, following protests over soaring prices as the local currency depreciates, the information minister said Tuesday.
“Except in case of emergency, no official will be allowed to travel,” the minister, Eugene Nagbe, told AFP.
