Five killed by police at Ethiopian religious festival

At least five people have been killed in northern Ethiopia after security forces fired on a crowd at a religious festival who were reportedly shouting anti-government slogans.

Many more were injured in the incident in the town of Waldiya. Angry protesters have blocked roads and businesses are closed.

Wow! 95 rebel groups surrender in Ethiopia

A total of 95 Ethiopian rebels surrendered to Ethiopian authorities over the weekend, Ethiopia’s state owned broadcaster Ethiopian Broadcasting Corporation (EBC) reported on Monday.
The EBC said the rebels are members of an ethnic rebel group Benishangul Gumuz Liberation Movement (BGLM) operating in Ethiopia’s border regions adjoining Eritrea and Sudan.

An Ethiopian journalist was sentenced on Friday to 18 months in prison on charges of subversion, his lawyer said, but is expected to be freed within a week as he has been in jail since his arrest in late 2015.
Critics say Ethiopia, an important Horn of Africa ally of the West sandwiched between volatile Somalia and Sudan, regularly targets journalists for alleged security offences as a way to stifle dissent and clamp down on media freedoms. The Addis Ababa government denies those accusations.

A tribal ceremony during which young women are whipped in order to show the sacrifices they make for men is revealed in a series of photographs.
Members of the Hamar tribe in Ethiopia believe the elaborate scars demonstrate a woman’s capacity for love, and if they fall on hard times later in life it allows them to call on those who whipped them for help.
Women are whipped as part of a Rite of Passage ceremony for boys, when female family members declare their love for the young man at the heart of the celebration.

Oh goodness me! Landslide at rubbish dump near Addis Ababa kills 35

Diggers begin a massive operation to recover bodies



At least 35 people have been killed and several dozen are missing after a rubbish dump landslide near Addis Ababa.
Makeshift homes and concrete buildings were buried by the landslide at the massive landfill site just outside the Ethiopian capital.
About 150 people - including a number of children - were there at the time of the landslide and many had been scavenging for items to sell while others lived there in homes built from mud and sticks.
