Egypt said Saturday that 21 jihadists were killed in clashes with security forces in the restive Sinai peninsula, where Islamic State group-affiliated militants have waged a long-running insurgency.

Egypt balloon crash at Luxor resort kills tourist
A hot air balloon carrying tourists has crashed near the Egyptian city of Luxor, with one person killed and 15 injured, officials say.

About 20 people were on board when the accident occurred on Friday. The tourist who died was South African.

Egypt archaeologists discover mummy in Luxor
Egyptian archaeologists have discovered a mummy in one of two previously unexplored tombs across the Nile from the southern city of Luxor, the antiquities ministry said Saturday.

The tombs were found in the 1990s by German archaeologist Frederica Kampp, though she had only reached the entrance gate “but never entered”, the ministry said.

Death toll in Egypt mosque attack rises to more than 300
Gunmen attacked a packed mosque in Egypt's restive North Sinai province on Friday and set off a bomb, killing at least 305 people in the country's deadliest attack in recent memory.

According to officials, the militants opened fire from four off-road vehicles on Sufi worshippers during a Friday sermon in the Rawda mosque, roughly 40 kilometres west of the North Sinai capital of El-Arish, blocking off escape routes from the area by blowing up cars and leaving the burning wrecks blocking the roads.

Egyptian Army destroys extremists hideouts, 2 vehicles in Central Sinai
The Egyptian Army destroyed five hideouts and two vehicles belonging to extremists in Central Sinai, the Egyptian military spokesman, Tamer al-Refaay, said in a statement on Wednesday in Cairo.
The Central Sinai is at the Southern part of North Sinai province bordering Israel and the Palestinian Gaza strip.

Liverpool forward Mohamed Salah converted a stoppage-time penalty to give Egypt a dramatic 2-1 win over Congo Brazzaville Sunday and a place at the 2018 World Cup in Russia with Nigeria.

Salah put Egypt ahead during the second half in Alexandria only for Arnold Bouka Moutou to equalise two minutes from the end of regular time.

A team of more than 20 doctors had been caring for Eman Ahmed Abd El Aty since her arrival at Burjeel Hospital in May.

Not again! Sinai attack kills 18 Egyptian policemen
At least 18 Egyptian policemen were killed and three injured on Monday in an attack claimed by Islamic State on a security convoy in the Sinai Peninsula, which is gripped by an insurgency.
Security and medical sources said the attack took place near Arish, the capital of North Sinai province, and two of those killed were officers. A brigadier general lost a leg in the blast.

US slashes military and economic aid to Egypt citing poor human rights record
The Trump administration cut or delayed hundreds of millions of dollars in aid to Cairo, citing human rights concerns, hours before Egypt's president and foreign minister met with White House adviser Jared Kushner on Wednesday.
Kushner, who is also President Donald Trump's son-in-law, was in Cairo as part of a Middle East tour aimed at exploring ways to revive Israeli-Palestinian peace talks, which last collapsed in 2014.

At least two foreign tourists killed in knife attack at Egyptian resort
Two foreign tourists were killed and four others were wounded by an attacker armed with a knife at an Egyptian holiday resort in Hurghada, the interior ministry said Friday.
The motive for the attack was still under investigation, Egypt’s interior ministry and security sources said, adding that the assailant was arrested immediately. The wounded tourists were rushed to a local hospital.

Egyptian police kill 16 gunmen in raids targeting militants
Egypt's Interior Ministry said on Saturday police officers had shot dead 16 gunmen in two shootouts, adding that most of those killed were fugitive militants linked to recent attacks on security forces in Northern Sinai.
Egypt faces an Islamist insurgency led by the Islamic State group in the restive Sinai Peninsula, where hundreds of soldiers and police have been killed since 2013.
